Old as the Wild West and amazingly modern in the new interpretation of contemporary artists – country never ceases to surprise the audience. It is one of these genres, which are constantly developed and progressing, but at the same time kept close to the roots. Often described as the “cowboy music” country goes far beyond this description, combining elements of folk, gospel and rock music. There are various subgenres of country, such as country rock, outlaw country or bluegrass – a combination of country, gospel, blues and jazz. The still growing popularity of country music owes a lot to the so-called Nashville sound. In 1960s Nashville, Tennessee became known as the “capital” of country music – the centre of country music industry. It also promoted new style of country, which was much softer, focused more on melody than improvisation and influenced by the pop music style. Most prominent country stars, who performed in Nashville style were Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves and Lynn Anderson. Merging country with rock was also a guarantee of success for stars such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and The Byrds. When there’s a mainstream sound, there is always an alternative and in 1990s artists as Lucinda Williams, Will Oldham and Steve Earle made the alternative country genre very popular. Contemporary country is somewhere between the alternative sound and fresh look on pop country music, delivered by stars such as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood.
